Wegerif on Dialogue

Gunter kress

More specifically, according to Kress's definition, CDA treats language as a type of social practice among many used for representation and signification (including visual images, music, gestures, etc.). Texts are produced by "socially situated speakers and writers." The relations of participants in producing texts are not always equal: there will be a range from complete solidarity to complete inequality. Meanings come about through interaction between readers and receivers and linguistic features come about as a result of social processes, which are never arbitrary. In most interactions, users of language bring with them different dispositions toward language, which are closely related to social positionings. History must also be taken into account, as ideologically and politically "inflected time." Finally, precise analysis and "descriptions of the materiality of language" are factors which are always characteristic of CDA.

Concept Map Research

Starting to look at concept mapping and record some of my research here now.
I have a range of research articles which I would like to comment on.

C oncept maps are tools for organizing and representing knowledge. They include concepts, usually enclosed in circles or boxes of some type, and relationships between concepts or propositions, indicated by a connecting line between two concepts. Words on the line specify the relationship between the two concepts. We define concept as a perceived regularity in events or objects, or records of events or objects, designated by a label. The label for most concepts is a word, although sometimes we use symbols such as + or %. Propositions are statements about some object or event in the universe, either naturally occurring or constructed. Propositions contain two or more concepts connected with other words to form a meaningful statement. Sometimes these are called semantic units,or units of meaning.

IHMC Concept Map Software

This article from Novak at Cornell University is an interesting start.Concept maps not only organise but they can represent knowledge. Semantic unit is also an interesting phrase.

Flock

This tool is just amazing. I have been waiting for this for some time and it just seems to be the ideal tool for any one doing research that wants to keep an online research journal in the form of a blog etc.

You can also add photos through Flickr etc

I am a commited fan of Flock and will follow its development.

I just Gilly Salmons book e-tivities so should be an interesting read. I will look for some ideas for the projects.
I am doing a small bit of research on knowlwdge software and have found some usefull stuff. Lots of folk are saying that bloggs like this are as good as some of the expensive tools. Knowledge forum used in the CSILE project from Canada is intersting. there are other projects happening with US school boards using groove workspace, this has been designed by the designer of lotus notes. Of course all comercial which is a shame I am really looking for a open source alternative. I might just try to hash some something together using different scripts etc in php with a mysql database at the backend..

Just went back to jack whiteheads site and read some of the papers there. I was disapointed that some of the papers at MA level looks about the same quality as mine so therefore why has mine been criticised. I am happy that I will end my MA course and look forward to a more focused smaller research project.
I have started some reading on knowledge management and organisational learning. I focused on Schons writings at http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-schon.htm
This is the first post in this research note blog. The projects that I have thoughts on have many overlaps. Project GTC is a focused look at the difficulties and successes of using online forums for professional development opportunities. This involves facilitation and analysis of forums scripts. Project IWB looks at the use of interactive white boards and knowledge bases linked by visual concept maps. This involves analysis of the effectiveness of this type of resource on focus groups.
